Determining Room Occupancy

Recording the number of people in a room or area.

In this case, the goal is to determine how many people are in a room over the course of the day.
This may be necessary because hygiene regulations stipulate that no more than n people are allowed in a room at any given time. Similarly, you can analyze the usage and booking patterns of existing meeting rooms based on current and historical data.

One result can be that several small rooms instead of one large meeting room cover the actual needs of the team more efficiently. Instead of additional space, the existing space can be used more efficiently by converting it.

An EnoSense® People Counter door sensor is mounted above the door on the corridor side as a data source. This is done after cleaning the surface of the door frame with the pre-assembled double-sided adhesive pad.

The sensor detects people passing below (distance between people typ. 1.00 m) and sends an EnOcean message with a count value (0 .. 255) immediately after detecting a person.
The value changes continuously (positive counting direction 254, 255, 0, 1, 2, …; negative counting direction 1, 0, 255, 254, 253, …). The actual number of people must be determined by the cloud application.
This also makes it possible to equip rooms with more than one door and therefore with more than one EnoSense® People Counter.

An EnoDisc® within range captures the data and forwards it via Ethernet to the VL-700 BASE. Depending on the configuration there (up to 500 sensors are supported), the VL-700 BASE then sends the data in JSON format to the MQTT broker of your choice. Using this approach, we have already made several hundred buildings significantly more efficient in terms of usage and cost-effectiveness.

The accuracy of the EnoSense® People Counter typically ranges between 80% and 95%. Various factors play a role here (please feel free to contact us for more information).
If it is essential to reliably detect an empty room (i.e., 100% accuracy)—for example, to generate an approval in a booking system—it is recommended to also use a motion detector such as the EnoSense® PIR Ceiling in the room.
If the detector does not detect any movement after, say, 20 minutes, the counter for the number of people in the room is reset to 0, regardless of the current count.
This allows you to periodically correct any potentially incorrect counts.

EnoSense® People Counter - How It Works

This video shows how the EnoSense® People Counter works. This has been attached to the outside of the frame above the door with the double-sided adhesive pad (left in the picture). On the right-hand side you will see the screen of a demo application. On the left you will see the raw value ``Raw value`` (1 byte). This counts consecutively +/-. After 255 it continues with 0 in a positive direction. After 0 comes the 255 in the negative direction. The evaluation of the absolute number of people takes place in the application in your cloud, not in the EnoSense People Counter. This is the most sensible solution for calculating the counter values, especially if there are several doors and therefore several people counters in a room.
